RESUMO

This paper aims to discover whether the insertion of subway stations in urban areas is truly capable of impressing urban impacts on the areas defined as Immediate Influence, within a 600m radius from this transport node. Initially the study established the theoretical foundations, referencing both the theories which dealt with the indirect impacts (social, value and soil uses) on the transport related urban ambience and, in particular, the systematic of transport-oriented urban development models. From these bases, the methodology used in the diagnosis of the impacts was elected, taking two variables into consideration: the changes in land uses and the building density in the area, which were determinant features in the verification of consequent urban impacts. These variables were investigated in samples elected as case studies selected based on three main points: according to the periods for which data were available; favoring stations which complemented the line segments (which, supposedly, would increased the efficiency of these structures in terms of accessibility) and finally electing those which had been implemented in different areas and under different circumstances. The urban changes resulting from the insertions of a subway station were, thus, proven by an increase in the number of vertical developments and a greater variation in the built area per square for high rise buildings, particularly residential condominiums of average standard, within the area of Immediate Influence and in the first five years of the opening of these stations. If, on one hand, these results are not sufficient for more general statements, on the other they confirm that for most of the cases studied in this paper, the opening of new transport structures, in fact, induce urban transformations, increasing residential density in their immediate surroundings.
