RESUMO

Present work that integrates a Healthy Community Program focus on a group ofthe Community Health Agents (CHA) from S. Marcos, a poor region of Campinas outskirts. It was devised to study the development of the autonomy of a group of CHA which were challenged to use the telematic resources of Distance Education (DE) and digital technology as tools for a Community Health Promotion Programo It was expected that CHA, immersed in these multimedia leaming ambiences could find a way to exert their autonomy and incorporate new technologies and new knowledge to transform their praxis and improve efforts in direction of Healthy Community con-struction. By means of a research-action process, incIuding distance and presence leaming activities, it could be seen that the development of autonomy in adults followed a conflicting movement in which elements from the child stages described by Piaget could be detected. However, enduring or pure stages did not result from the combination of these different elements. Its evolution was rather linked to social cultural aspects, personal interests, work ambience and mental represen-tations lifelong constructed. We observed that the dialogue between these mental representations we label as entities, were determinants to maintain ambiences able to develop leaming and autonomy. Results obtained indicate that students feel more at easy in those ambiences where entities are well defined and controlled by participants. Under these conditions, proposed learning and autonomy de-velop freely and can be observed. Otherwise when entities are poorly defined, they are chaotic and escape control; new entities then appear (suspicion, insecurity, dissatisfaction) favoring implosion of the learning ambience and failure of empowerment of the digital technologies. Educators and instructors which intend to work with telematic webs of distant education should then be aware of the need to understand this dialogue between entities and acquire the required skills and competences to mediate this communication in order to permit the development of the student autonomy
