RESUMO

Architects rely on representation to externalise design thoughts. Traditionally they have been using pencil design sketches (traditional media) in the conceptual design. Most recently, a number of designers have introduced the use of digital media in sketching. The main purpose of this Thesis is to investigate the cognitive design processes used by architects in conceptualising design ideas using those both media. Three subjects gave the theoretical support to our research: (1) the architectural design process (focusing on conception); (2) the cognitive processes applied to Architecture and (3) the medias of architectural representation (pencil and paper X CAD) applied on the architectural conception. Data were gathered from: (1) an initial design process of two groups of individuals using both design media to complete two isomorphic tasks which were videotaped; (2) mental models of these tasks; (3) questionnaires; (4) analysis of the retrospective verbal protocols about the same tasks. These groups were observed at UFPE (Brazil) and at University of Sheffield (England). The development and analysis of a coding scheme of the design behaviour of each individual (segmentations and categorisations of the cognitive actions) allowed a relational study of the design activities in terms of the primitive cognitive actions adopted by them in each design media
