RESUMO

Development standards defined by men bring along a greater demand for natural resources, which may result in the degradation of rivers, compromising their diverse uses, especially the supply of water for human consumption. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze potential alterations of the physical, chemical, microbiological and toxicity characteristics of the raw water from the Paraiba do Sul River in two collection sites: the São Silvestre Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the Central WTP - located approximately seventeen kilometers apart - and to verify the effects of these alterations in the lotic system by tests conducted in static reactors in three different times of the year. The study site presents distinct characteristics: the presence of a major industrial plant downstream the São Silvestre WTP, without any other insertion of domestic or industrial waste lines along the studied area. Statistical assessments of the water at the two collection sites showed differences in a few parameters (alkalinity, chloride, sulfate, total dissolved solids and consumed oxygen), greater averages being found in the Central WTP waters. Regarding the period of time, greater averages of the parameters studied were found during the season of frequent rains, decreasing during the time of occasional or no rain. A greater consumption of coagulants was verified at Central WTP, not only in bench tests but also in the data collected in actual scale (37.2%), and differences in the raw water between the two sites were observed through coagulation diagrams, reaffirming that modifications occurred after the São Silvestre site that interfered in the treatability processes
