RESUMO

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is a polyphagous insect that causes damage in several crops, methods to control are often inefficient and this justifies the search for new forms of management. Thus, this study was to evaluate the effect of plant extracts and phenolic compounds on biological, biochemical and ultrastructural characteristics of S. frugiperda. The plant extracts, made from the leaves and bark of the fruits of Copaifera langsdorffii caused a reduction in growth, increase in duration of development, mortality, and affect the parameters for the reproduction of this insect. Moreover, the eggs of insects that fed on these treatments during the larval stage, showed abnormalities when subjected to ultrastructural analysis. Note also the increase in protein excretion in the feces of insects and inhibition of trypsin activity in vitro test performed. It can also be observed that larvae fed on diet containing the extract Actinostemon concolor showed a reduction in pupal weight, increase in the duration larval phase, reduced fecundity and fertility of adults, and changes in nutritional parameters. Eggs from adults in which the larvae were fed with the extracts of Palicourea rigida and A. concolor showed abnormalities, when subjected to ultrastructural analysis. Criofractures held in the midgut of larvae fed with A. concolor showed breaks in the villi of this insect. The extract of A. concolor was also very effective in reducing the trypsin activity of S. frugiperda test performed in vitro. It can also be evidenced that A. concolor showed high concentration of phenolic compounds, which when subjected to the tests with S. frugiperda caused changes similar to those caused by the crude extract, such as reduction in survival, weight of larvae and pupae, prolongation of the larval stage and changes in nutritional parameters. The results of this study show the potential of C. langsdorffii and A. concolor for the control of S. frugiperda.
