RESUMO

Stainless steel 316L wire, straight or deformed by torsion, was analysed through a stereoscopic microscope. scanning electron microscope and metallography. Torsion enhanced segregation lines, deformed the surface and generated tension in the internal structure. After implantation in rat muscle, the twisted wire presented lack of cohesion between metal grains, as well as loss of grains, resulting in clefts. Those observations suggested corrosion after 120 days. Although the wira presented irregularities, the histopathological results confirmed the fact that the 316L stainless steel wire is highly biocompatible.
