RESUMO

The proposal of this dissertation is a study on the work of José Ferraz de Almeida Júnior, approaching issues discussed by the critics which refer to controversial aspects of his production. This study portrays the painter?s ?regionalista? production, recognized by the critics and pointed out as a dividing mark for the national art. In that perspective this writing analyzes some relevant aspects of these works in order to understand the context in which they appeared, the different critical evaluations that they received and the role they had in the renewal process of the Brazilian artistic panorama
