RESUMO

The Mariano Procópio Museum was one of the first museum in Brazil. Its private collection presents an encyclopedic, the institution was constituted from the beginning, this collection was thought of as something destined for the government, focused on the construction of a nationality beginning with the Imperial period, bust without ignoring an earlier tradition. The Museum was opened to the public through appointment in 1915, but long before then, he used to receive curious visitors who were interested in seeing the marvelous items kept at the country house. Officially inaugurated in June 1921, the Mariano Procópio Museum was the result of Alfredo Ferreira Lages dream to build a memorial to the Brazilian nation, in his native city, presenting his view of the countrys past. Alfredo Ferreira Lage donated his museum to the government in February 1936
