By means of the Clínical Method, the patients were evaluated within a period of three to eight months following the trauma through a Semi-structured Interview and three instruments of functional evaluation: Barthel Index, Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) and Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ). The main results observed were: 1) Functional disability and important complications in both groups e 2) Changes in quality of life characterized by social difficulties and alteration in the affective function of the studied patients. The psychosocial adjustment was worse for the group of SCI patients compared to the group of TBI patients. The factors associated with the worst social adjustment were: a) low educational leveI; b) more severe work incapacity; c) more severe incapacity to perform autonomous functions and activities of daily living (ADL), d) enhanced impairment of the affective function. The conclusion of this study was that the educational level and the type of professional activity previous to the injury are predictive factors for the psychosocial adjustment of patients with TBI and SCI after the lesion. Suggest further studies be conducted for in-depth investigation of this problem, as well as more active participation of e risk for these disabling lesions.
