RESUMO

This thesis emerged from the need to better understand how the insertion of mentally ill people into the work market happens, in the city of Recife, Pernambuco. As a starting point, it was considered that the productive restructuring which promotes the significant lowering of the number of work spots only makes the access to these spots harder and, many times, impossible for people with these vulnerabilities to take part in. On the other hand, mental illnesses shouldnât be considered a hinderer in regards to the accomplishment of the work itself, and from this premise, we questioned which factors, other than that biological one, could interfere in the engagement of people with mental disorders in productive money-making activities. To acquire such answers, users, family members and technicians of mental health services CAPS were heard, in the second semester of 2006. Through the analysis of the contents of the interviewed peopleâs speech it was possible to conclude that although work is considered a legal right and a highly important element in a personâs life, when it comes to mentally ill people, the stigma and the lack of information on the subject make users and family members doubtful or even in disbelief regarding the possibility of reinsertion into a workplace. People who keep any productive activity after the mental disorder are, in general, more optimistic about the future, regardless of the clinical diagnosis. The technicians identified that flaws in the execution of public politics in the mental health area contribute to the increase of the difficulties for economical reinsertion. Furthermore, it was observed that there was a contextual separation among the speeches of the three groups that were interviewed, establishing, on one side, users and family members and, on the other side, the serviceâs technicians. It is up to the State to provide these technicians with the necessary instruments so that, in their practice, theyâll be able to seek the best mediating conditions and, then, contribute to the social-economical inclusion of people with mental disorders, keeping focused on the principles of psychiatric reform and consequent social reinsertion
