RESUMO

This work aims to propose a method for grouping 41 Amazonian wood species for drying. Besides, it specifically aims: 1) to select from literature which physical and mechanical characteristics affect the drying process and to determine these selected properties for the 41 wood species; 2) to establish any meaningful correlation between the studied properties and the woods behavior upon drying; 3) to develop statistical models based on the determined properties in order to estimate de woods performance on drying under the following conditions: from green to 12% moisture content (MC), from green to the fiber saturation point (PSF) and from the PSF to 12% MC; 4) furthermore, wood species with similar behavior on drying will be grouped. The studied properties were: pore tangential diameter; pore frequency; pore frequency to blocked pore frequency ratio; the fibers measures (maximum fiber diameter, lumen width and wall thickness); the basic density; total volumetric shrinkage; drying time and drying rate from green to 12% MC, from green do 30% MC and from 30% to 12% MC. The fiber lumen width and basic density were, respectively, the anatomical and physical characteristics that showed the higher correlation coefficients with the drying properties. Multiple regression models were developed to estimate drying times. Although the models presented low R values, they showed to be meaningful at the 5% probability level. These low values were attributed to the large size of the population of wood species studied and to the high variability of their properties. Based on the calculated drying rates the wood species were classified and grouped. Wood species included in a given group can be submitted to drying at once under the same drying schedule. Other wood species might be classified and included to any of the four groups presented here, based on the drying rates determined using the drying times estimated by the models proposed.
