RESUMO

The researches and the relations of risk factors associated to pesticides and to the health of the rural worker are of great importance to public health as the indiscriminate usage of those products affect human health as well as natural ecosystems. Studies indicate pesticides as carcinogenic factor. The objective was to track cancer cases in Culturama district in the town of Fátima do Sul in Mato Grosso do Sul State and to identify risk factors related to the health of the rural workers and their families for exposure to pesticides. An epidemic inquiry was performed with 100 inhabitants both male and female in order to scan cases of chronic diseases and their possible relation to the exposure to pesticides in the town of Fátima do Sul in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. It was performed a dosage of acetilcolinesterasis enzyme. Symptoms which might be related to chronic intoxication of the workers were identified as well as cases of abortion, inadequate storage of pesticide packaging, inadequate use of individual protection equipment and low technology aspersion equipment. The results did not allow for the establishment of a causal relationship among the risk factors observed and the occurrence of cancer in the studied community possibly due to the size of the sample. The fear for legal sanctions related to the inadequate use of pesticides and the lack of usage of individual protection equipment might have influenced the quality of the information given by the rural workers taking part in the study. The results obtained by the present study suggest the possibility of association between pesticides and cancer however new studies are necessary in order to confirm the initial observations. Models of case-control studies might contribute to clarify the hypothesis in this study.
