RESUMO

Sugarcane ethanol, considered a major source of clean energy, is an option for changing the energy matrix of Brazil and also the world, contributing to the reduction in consumption of fossil fuels. In Brazil, Goiás State is one of the sugarcane expansion s frontiers to meet the growing demand for biofuels. But this expansion means sugarcane mills could take up areas of other temporary crops, including those run by family farming. Remote sensing is an important source of information to assess the rapid changes in land use caused by the dynamics of agricultural activity. In this context, the hypothesis adopted here is that through satellite images and GIS techniques it is possible identify areas of sugarcane expansion over areas of annual crops (mainly grains) in Goiás State. In addition, data related to household production linked to the PAA (National Food Acquisition Programme), may indicate correlations between the sugarcane expansion and this household production. Thus, the main objective of this study is to identify the municipalities where there was greater expansion of sugarcane between 2005/2006 and 2009/2010 harvesting seasons, which have considerable participation of family farmers in agricultural production under the PAA, whose production eventually may have been displaced by sugarcane, serving as subsidy for future detailed studies about possible impacts of sugarcane area expansion on family farming. For this analysis, data of IBGE of Municipal Agricultural Production and participation of Goiás in the PAA were used, together with grains and sugarcane crop masks, both provided by Conab (National Food Supply Agency). We identified the municipalities of Santa Isabel, Iaciara, Maurilândia, Itapaci and Jataí, pinpointing the need of detailed studies to assess direct and indirect impacts of sugarcane expansion in Goiás State.
