RESUMO

In Ceará there are two native Spondias species: S. mombin and S. tuberosa, commonly known as cajá and umbu, respectively. These plants are popularly used for various medicinal purposes. The medicinal properties are often related to the power of their phenolic compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiviral, relating them to the chemical composition of these species. To determine the antioxidant activity the methods used were for capturing the free radicals DPPH and ABTS. Regarding the antimicrobial activity test the methods performed were the plate cavity assay and determination of minimun inhibitory concentration. The antiviral activity was evaluated by the MTT colorimetric assay to determine the cytotoxic concentration and the inhibitory concentration against dengue virus 2. The chemical analysis and quantification of main phenolic compounds from ethanolic extracts of both species were performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). HPLC analysis showed the presence of ellagic acid and quercetin for both species and rutin only for S. tuberosa. The species S. mombin had the best anti-radical activity using the DPPH assay and similar results to S. tuberosa in ABTS assay. The antimicrobial activity of S. tuberosa was higher than S. mombin, probably due to the presence of rutin. Antiviral activity of pure constituents showed better results compared with the extracts. Therefore, this study has added value to these species with their bioprospecting related to its chemical composition.
