RESUMO

In this work are presented studies to evaluate the adsorption capacity of the expanded vermiculite mineral and of the vermiculite hydrophobized mineral originating from the states of Piauí and Goiás with different size. Tests of adsorption were accomplished in direct contact systems with oil, contact with solution oil-water that simulates oil spilling in the surface of waters and contact with oil emulsion in water. It was carried out initially the characterization of the expanded vermiculite mineral, of the vermiculita hydrophobized mineral and of the study reagent, oleic acid. For the vermiculitas, characterization tests were accomplished by size distribution analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, determination of the specific mass, specific surface, volume and area micropores; maximum size, medium diameter and total volume of the pores. For the oleic acid characterization tests were accomplished by density, solubility and gas cromatography. After the characterization analyses results were executed adsorption rehearsals for each system such as: pure oil, oil on the water and oil emulsion in water. It were verified the concentrations effects, of the pH and adsorption kinetics to determine adsorption capacity great conditions of the materials. For the oil in water emulsion system also were accomplished the emulsion stabilization and destabilization tests. Parallelly to the study of the vermiculite mineral (expanded and hydrophobized) adsorption capacity in the mentioned conditions was accomplished these minerals comparison with adsorvente action materials known at the market as the Canadian peat and the activated coal. The results indicate a difference in the adsorption capacity among the vermiculites researched in agreement with the studied systems. It also showed that the hydrophobic vermiculite dies of Piauí adsorption capacity is close to the peat adsorption capacity while the activated coal adsorption capacity is inferior to the other tested materials one.
