RESUMO

Adsorption of reactive dyes orange 16, red 120 and blue 4 by quaternary chitosan salt (QCS) or chitosan-N-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride was used as model to demonstrate the removal of reactive dyes from textile effluents. The polymer was characterized by IV, ATG, EDX analysis and amount of quaternary ammonium groups. The adsorption experiments were conducted at different pH values and the adsorption showed slightly dependence of the solution pH. Two kinetic adsorption models were tested: pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order. The experimental data best fit at the pseudo second-order model. Textile effluents rarely involve only one component. Consequently, the adsorption projects must be able to deal with multi component equilibrium data. So, the equilibrium experiments of the reactive dyes were tested both individually and in ternary solutions. The isotermic adsorption analysis of each individual dye was conducted at temperatures of 25 oC and 50 oC and the temperature increased the adsorbent capacity adsorption. The Langmuir isotherm model provided the best fit for the equilibrium data in the concentration range investigated. Excepting the reactive dye RB4, at 50 oC temperature, for which the linear isotherm showed the best fit. The adsorption behavior of the dyes in ternary solutions was then observed. To determinate the concentration of each dye in solution, linear equations expanded for three terms were utilized. Multicomponent solution dyes in the range of 40 - 340 mgL-1 were investigated in pH 4 and pH 12.4 to simulate industrial textiles effluent. The experimental data were best fit by the Langmuir isotherm. To investigate the possibility of recycling adsorbent was studied the desorption of the reactive dyes RO 16 and RR 120 with several eluents. The experiments were divided into three parts: adsorption, washing and desorption, and the solution NaNO3 3 mol L-1 was the best elluent for dyes desorption. From studies of pH and the desorption was concluded that the ionic interaction is the main mechanism of adsorption for dyes by quaternary chitosan salt (QCS). The results showed that quaternary chitosan salt (QCS) can be used as an alternative for the treatment of effluent from the textile industry independent of the pH of the aqueous environment.
