RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Journalistic texts that cover scientific topics published in news magazines usually represent sources of information and clarification for the population. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the approach to menopause in texts exclusively concerning the subject and compare its amount in relation to texts published on women?s health and general health in the following magazines: Veja, Claudia and Metrópole. METHODS: A descriptive study design was used. Texts were selected from June 2002 to May 2003, collected weekly and transferred to records. Given the nature of the study, analysis of the data was performed in four stages. In the first stage, texts about menopause written in magazines were quantified in relation to texts on women?s health and general health. In the second stage, the texts were classified according to their journalistic genre as informative (note, news, reporting and interview) and opinionated (column, comments, editorial, article, letter and caricature). In the third stage, a thematic analysis of menopause was performed, literally transcribing these texts and importing them into the The Ethnograph v 5.0 program. The texts were reformatted and each line was numbered. Analyses of the transcriptions were based on reading the text in search of significant topics and identifying units of meaning, allowing the proposal of nine categories of analysis: hormone replacement therapy (HRT), breast cancer, heart disease, ageing, osteoporosis, symptoms, depression, skin and sex-libido. Texts were reread, marking the lines corresponding to each category of analysis. The marked lines were transferred to text files. With search program procedures, parts of texts were gathered from each category of analysis. These groups of xxiii texts were read and evaluated regarding their thematic content. In the fourth stage, the texts were classified according to predominant aspects: biological, sociocultural and psychological. RESULTS: General health was prevalent in the texts studied, with 312 (81%) citations. Women?s health and menopause appeared respectively in 52 (13.5%) and 20 (5.2%) citations, and Veja magazine alone cited menopause in 17 texts. The informative genre was present in practically every text selected, except one, which was of an opionionated nature. Notes made up the majority (201), followed by the news (109), reporting (63) and interviews (ten). The biological aspects (36) of menopause were the most discussed contents in magazines. These were followed by sociocultural (five) and psychological (three) aspects. The thematic category that predominated in the texts about menopause was HRT (34), followed by breast cancer (24), heart disease (17), ageing (5), osteoporosis (five), symptoms (four), depression (three), skin (one) and sex-libido (one). CONCLUSION: In comparison to general health issues, menopause was less published, but proved to be significant when compared to women?s health issues. Texts assumed an almost exclusive informative character. The issues highlighted the biological aspects of menopause. The most frequent category of thematic analysis was HRT. We need to adopt an in-depth approach to the subject, with information on all important aspects to facilitate reader comprehension
