RESUMO
This paper seeks to verify the relationship between size, in terms of the GDP and population, opening and economic growth in Brazil. The sample was constituted of the Brazilian states for period 1989-2000. We follow the empirical approach proposed by Alesina et al (2000 and 2004). We compare the results of the OLS, SUR and 3SLS with different measures for size. The joined results are consistent with recent literature on the subject. Specifically, opening and size are key factors in explaining the growth pattern of the Brazilian states. Moreover, the larger the state, the smaller are the benefits of the economic opening on growth on the long run
