RESUMO

In agreement with the theory of the Economical Enclave and with the theory of the Base of Export, the typical mining districts have great difficulties to develop themselves in a dynamic and autonomous way in relation to the mineral activity. Therefore, even the oldest mining districts are economically dependent and almost their total development perspectives get confused with the perspectives of the mineral industry. After presenting in a quite brief way the theories mentioned above, this study presents and debates the economical indicators that leave few doubt to showing that the Brazilian mining district of Itabira, in Minas Gerais State, grew up in agreement with these theories. In other words, even after decades as one of the most important iron ore mining district in the world, it was unable to increase a diversified economy and to develop autonomous productive activities out of mining. Finally, it was discussed with some local politicians, business men and with community and syndical leaders the vision each one has about the economical reality of Itabira. Among these personalities is the General Manager of Itabira Mines. These interviews outlined Itabira dependence in relation to the mining activity, the possibilities of developing an autonomous economical project and the future the mining district will have in the post-mining era.
