RESUMO

This thesis is based on a research that has the purpose of understanding the job of an independent saleswoman, in the past known as the door to door seller. It is a case study placed in São Paulos metropolitan area. As approximately ninety per cent of this activity is executed by women, their participation in this study was highly more expressive then mens, however this fact does not characterize this thesis as a gender study. The hypotheses, which guided this study, suggest that the major reason why woman decide working as an independent saleswoman is the need of income, as well as to complement their earnings. The study demonstrated that being an independent saleswoman is an option for those who are excluded from the formal job market, unemployed or have low income. A third hypothesis suggests that the strong affective relationship among the company, the product and the independent saleswoman is an important driver of job motivation and results for the company. Many qualitative researches where developed relying on these hypotheses. Interviews using specified open-ended questions and structuralized questionnaires where applied on independent saleswomen and members of the organization for whom they work. The results were gathered and analyzed based on the Group-Subject Discourse Technique, making use of methodological figures as key words and main ideas that made possible the construction of the speeches. Furthermore, a hundred saleswomen participated of quantitative researches in order to deepen the main comments of the interviewee during the qualitative researches. The results offered accuracy to the interpretation and analysis stage and the consequently conclusion of this thesis with the final considerations. According to the researches and interviews, it was possible to ensure that the main reason why women work with independent selling is the need to earn money or enhance their income
