RESUMO

Antonio Candido, in Formação da Literatura Brasileira, said that the ecological vocation of our novel, our so peculiar hunger for spaces, was in a measure the way our first authors would have found to replace social complexity and variety allegedly inexistent in Brazil by that time which would be, according to him, the own flesh of high level fiction. In a newly emancipated society, with few civilization niches, characterized by a not so varied network of social relations in which the conflicts between act and norm would be less frequent, the landscape and investigative character of our first novel would have been, at the same time, privileged solution and prop. This thought is aligned with the broader trend of the theory of the novel, which considers as fundamental elements of genre the capitalist bourgeois ascension and the individualist realism consolidation. The novel heroes come to be the economical individualism ones, therefore demonstrating the coherence among the genre and the economical and philosophical courses of modern society. Lúcia Miguel-Pereira agrees with him, being the literary genre the one that more directly nurtures from the relationships life, the novel could hardly reach heights in a society without deep stratification, of a weak spiritual density. This said, if the novel cannot deal with life essential elements in an abstract and general manner, but in the way it reveals itself through a certain human group, that is, socially credible as the same Lúcia Miguel-Pereira states then how to explain the complexity and modernity of a narrator such as Riobaldo and the quality of a novel such as Grande Sertão: Veredas, if placed in a supposed isolation of a patriarchal sertão? From this central problem, this research seeks fundamentally from the relations between the novel spatial figuring and this sertão narrators ethos to understand how the space and the peripheral social context could have interfered in the novel form, since Franco Moretti also states: a new space encourages paradigm shifts [] because it presents new problems and in this way it asks for new answers. It compels writers to put up with risks and try unprecedented combinations.
