RESUMO

Resilience is the capacity of the individual to overcome the adversities of life. During the development of each individual, there are situations that are difficult to cope with even when the individual is healthy i.e. coping with adversity with appropriate psychological attitudes and responses. Examples of losses are matrimonial and/or family separation, accident, sickness, and death. This study seeks to understand how families of patients of the Renal Replacement therapy service (RRT) deal with the challenges of chronic kidney disease (CKD), seeking to strengthen their family relationships and family survival. This study takes a qualitative approach using the method of Oral History. The participants were two families with members undergoing Renal Replacement Therapy, called the Soares family and the Lenzi family. The data collection used participant observation, interviews, and a field diary to record observations and occurrences during the interviews. All the legal ethical guidelines were followed. The results obtained were analyzed for each family. The following thematic categories were identified: Composition and organization of the family; history of the disease in the family context; the emergence of the disease and its implications on the family, coping strategies adopted, and the family support network used. Strategies used by the family to overcome the difficulties associated with chronic kidney disease and its treament proved important, but these forms of interacting are also the result of the way in which individuals, and the family, interpret the adversities, leading to resilience. Social support networks are an important factor in the familys process of coping and resilience. However, it is necessary for the renal therapy services to give professional support to families coping with this disease, that will enable them to face the family challenges involved in this treatment
