RESUMO

The term autism is extremely controversial, generating doubts in relation to its concept, for its origin is essentially phenomenological. The objective of this study is to intervene in the construction of new conceptual competencies among teachers, focusing on autism, and facilitate a discursive reelaboration of the teachers role. Seven teachers who worked in special education and who participated in a group of teachers continuous education that aimed at developing competencies to work with the autistic students took part in this intervention research. We used the theoretical-methodological proposition defended by Fávero (2001, 2005a, 2007) that articulates developmental psychology theories with semiotic mediation and social representations. This proposition can both be used in intervention research and in the psycho pedagogical practice and is based on three main elements: the use of the focus group as an intervention tool; the analysis of the speech acts of the interlocution among peers and the semiotic mediation revealed by means of the analysis of the consciousness taking process (Piaget, 1977) the most important part of this articulation. There were two propositions at the beginning of this study: the first was if it would be possible for the teachers to become aware of the shared representations of autism, the autistic student and the educational services provided, in the sense defended by Piaget and establish relationships with their own personal paradigms. The second proposition was if it would be possible for these teachers to become aware of the implications of their personal paradigms for their pedagogical practice and evaluate the reelaboration possibilities. The interventions are articulated in a way that the content analysis of one session provides information for the planning and development of the following session. We have verified that the methodological approach used was fundamental to the interlocution process among peers in order to favor the awareness raising process of the concepts under construction boosted by the cognitive regulations. We have also verified that there were changes in the conceptual construction and in the verbalization of some of the teachers in relation to the concept of autism and the autistic student and, as a consequence, there were changes in the interlocution of these teachers in relation to their pedagogical practice. Some of the teachers moved from a medical pedagogical approach that focuses on diagnosis to an educational practice that considers the autistic an active subject, also in charge of his own knowledge construction process through mediated activities. We have concluded that the method used is valuable to be used in the human science professionals continuous education, in general, aiming at developing new conceptual schemes to be used in their professional performance.
