RESUMO

Based on a process experienced by some Pataxó indians in Coroa Vermelha, Bahia, this master thesis presents and discusses aspects and assumptions of the anthropological theory about the emergency of ethnic identities. I bring into question some approaches that emphasize the utilitarian aspect of ethnicity, since they conceive identity and culture as means to achieve special benefits land, health care, and tourism recognition, as in the Pataxó case. I also cast doubt on the notion of history assumed by these approaches, which are based mainly on documents and on official historiography. Then, I present some historical narratives as they are actually thought and told by the indians themselves. Based on both their narratives and on their own point of view, it is possible to understand not the utility of their identity, but its meaning.
