RESUMO

In the last decades, nervous anorexia (AN) has been the target of studies and concern mainly in medicine and psychiatry, besides being a controversial subject in media and common sense. The search for thinnes as a beauty standard, inadequate weight loss practices underpinned by the uncertainties and scientific conflicts regarding nutrition issues have contributed significantly to a non-contagious epidemic of eating disorders. Nowadays nervous anorexia is more visible in our societies mainly due to the fact that people associate this disorder to the beauty and fashion industries, giving it the status of a disease of modernity. However we found clinical reports that foredate the classification and rationalization of the disease, which contributes to its demistification as a modern psychopathology reiterating it as a social psychopathology existing in other periods. The main goal of this research was to analyze how public healthcare professionals from Florianópolis/SC interpret, deal and decide which therapy to use in pacients with nervous anorexia. We also try to verify some of the scientific reasoning that involve the explanation of AN; which factors contribute to the development of AN nowadays; the social representations of healthcare professionals about what is AN; its causes; diagnosys; treatment; adequate professionals for a specialized team in eating disorders; the possibility of adding the sociologist in these specialized teams. The research is qualitative, exploratory and analytical, using case studies as its lineation principle. Altogether, 22 healthcare professionals where interviewed, from the medical, psychiatric, nutritional, psychological and nursing areas of base units of health and the Eating Disorders Clinic. It was verified that there exists a lack of research about eating disorders in primary care, absence of epidemiological studies on the actual incidence and prevalence of anorexia in Brazil, complexity and difficulty of diagnosys between healthcare professionals and the opening of large research field for sociology and humanities.
