RESUMO

Historically, the border Brazil / Uruguay was marked by strong conflicts between Portuguese and Spanish, who fought by the occupation of the territory. These conflicts eventually split geographically and culturally the two Iberian nations involved. From this set of dispute, lived in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this research looks for the identity processes and the implied relationship of brotherhood experienced by residents of the border Jaguarão, / Rio Branco in the twenty-first century. The study was conducted in Jaguarão, a city in southern Rio Grande do Sul, which borders the city of Rio Branco, Uruguay. Because of the geographical and cultural proximity between the two border towns, this research aims to investigate the representation of brotherhood in the voice of the inhabitant of Jaguarão in relation to the inhabitant of Rio Branco, which is the general objective of the thesis. This goal is unfolded in two specific goals. The first one is to analyze the social/discursive voices that point to the integration between inhabitants of Jaguarão and inhabitants of Rio Branco. The second objective is to examine the discourse of inhabitants of Jaguarão to verify how the marking of the difference in relation to Uruguayans is. This is a qualitative research of interdisciplinary character and was elaborated in two steps. In the first stage, seven individuals were interviewed in question-answer mode. The second one consisted of two depth interviews with two male subjects, participants of the interviews of the first phase. The in-depth interviews were conducted based on the assumptions of Gaskell and Bauer (2002), and research material was analyzed by the bias of the identity studies and the light from the perspective of Bakhtin and his Circle, particularly along the following lines, constitutive of language: language plurilingualism, responsive understanding and value accent. For the analysis, the interviews were divided into the following niches: border and law; language, music, food, fashion, party and nationality. With the aid of theoretical support, we found that the statements of those surveyed dialogue with other statements, and the imbrication of the difference and the integration (re) construct their identities constantly, sustain and question the brotherhood. Identity studies, through the eyes of different authors, helped in the perception of mobility and fluidity that pervade the voices of the border. Studies of the Bakhtin Circle allowed us to notice that the tension, orchestrated by different social/discursive voices that comprises the space in study, is present in the speeches of those surveyed. The material analysis showed that the brotherhood in the studied border is permeated by constant tension, producing speeches that aggregate resistance and integration between inhabitants of Jaguarão and inhabitants of Rio Branco
