RESUMO

The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the question of the social construction of male and female gender within the ethnographic context of the Jê linguistic family. Different approaches and interpretations concerning recurrent themes, during decades of studies of Jê peoples, resulted in a specific set of topics and notions which have been interwoven in a significant way with the question of the social construction of gender, and with gender relations in general. Research was carried out through a bibliographic analysis that included the Jê literature, besides other writings on Amerindian ethnology which contributed to the ideas developed in this dissertation. The bibliographic study is complemented by fieldwork carried out among the Apinajé lndians of the State of Tocantins. The field experience made it possible to perceive social aspects inscribed in life histories that allowed me to reflect upon themes relevant to the question of gender in ethnological studies of Amerindians
