RESUMO

This research, a qualitative study, aims at investigating the reasons for failure and drop out related to emotional aspects presented by adult beginner students of private English courses.We discuss how affectivity can influence the success or failure in the English as a Foreign Language teaching/learning process. Also we discuss the relevance of the balance between the affective and cognitive aspects in this process. For the research we selected six adult beginner students in the English course of a private school in Goiânia. In the data collection we used as reseach instruments, semi- structered interviews recorded in audio, a type of Likert Scale questionnaires, drawings made by the participants, representing the classroom, and finally, audio recorded interpretations of the drawings by the particpants themselves. Our results show the importance of promoting a favourable atmosphere for affective relationships in the classroom, and thus find the balance between affective and cognitive aspects in the teaching- learning process, which can contribute significantly to the students success in learning, expectations and goals in relation to the target language.
