RESUMO

This work has the objective of revealing and showing the Black Guard, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, between 1888 and 1889, through researches based on public files, libraries and newspapers of that time, having as methodological reference the Social History. As main object of the research, the organization will be portraited in an approach that will consider its formation, its members, its rituals, its main leaders and collaborators, its actions and its representations at the end of 19th century. The concepts of identities, imaginary, citizenship and representations were applied with the aim of making the operationalization of the research easier. Thus, it was necessary the analysis about Princess Isabel, the heir to Brazilian throne, main protection focus of the former slaves. We will study the Regents daily habits, both in private and in public life. We will talk about her intellectual background, familiar relations, her involvement with the abolicionist issue, her political actions, always consonant with the tipical 19th century world. There will be an important space for the comprehension of the black parties, with all their symbolism and of the capoeira as a resistance and social inclusion instrument, corroborated by the actions of the Black Fraternity, in the day-by-day of the excluded part of the society.
