RESUMO

The environmental degradation has been waking the attention of the society since the decade of 1950, when its consequences started to be seen over the planet. The process of degradation can be rise from the interaction between physical, economical, social and cultural factors. The objective of this work is to analyze the causes of degradation in the great region of Jaguaribe, situated in CearÃ. The geographical investigated area is the great region of Jaguaribe, that understands the following cities: Alto Santo, Aracati, ErerÃ, Fortim, Ibicuitinga, IcapuÃ, Iracema, ItaiÃaba, Jaguaretama, Jaguaribara, Jaguaribe, Jaguaruana, Limoeiro do Norte, Morada Nova, Palhano, Pereiro, Potiretama, QuixerÃ, Russas, SÃo JoÃo do Jaguaribe and Tabuleiro do Norte. The indicators were obtained from secondary data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistic (IBGE) and to the Institute of Inquiry and Economical Strategy of Ceara (IPECE). The principal results indicate that the city most inclined to degradation is Morada Nova, where the economical, social and environmental causes contribute almost equally to the phenomenon. As for the least inclined city, SÃo JoÃo do Jaguaribe, presents the least rate of inclination to degradation: 0,191. So, we understand that the analyzed cities are needing an infrastructure and social and economical support. The degradation, increased for the low income, finishes with the natural available resources, damaging the biodiversity.
