RESUMO

In the last decades Fortaleza has been facing a strong tendency in the raise of social inequality, observed mainly through the income distribution and its spacial materialization: a growing urban stratification corresponding to a system of social stratification. This research makes an exploratory analysis of the intra-urban space structure of the city, It is an analitical and critical report, based on the social inequality noticed mainly through the analysis of income concentration and socio-spacial segregation. Within the context of the intra-urban space analysis we will use some indicators to visualize and perceive the diversity of its elements and the complexity of its relations as well as broaden the capacity of perception of the urban phenomenon through the possibilities of its representation. In this sense, it is extremely important the data computerized representation and information of our object of study considering its use in geographic information system. Our main hypotesis is that social inequality as well as spacial segregation make part of a wider panorama which we will call urban segregation, which works as a structural product of capitalist system, where spacial patterns of urban segregation have a close relation with the characteristics and effects of economical restructuration and consequently of public and private policies, which work in the sense of atributing new patterns of use to the territory , as well as induce transformations to the already consolidated patterns. The reasearch has the objective to give a methodological contribution to intra-urban space analisys, which can be capable of representing its complexity, broadening the capacity of visualization and perception of the urban phenomena. The obtained results converge in the same direction, and together form a powerful instrument that can be used in the urban planning and development of the city, pointing out strategies in the elaboration and directioning of public policies.
