RESUMO

The aim of this text is to contribute to the studying of social-religious movements and Brazilian peasant culture, specifically in the frontier region. It refers to the Missão de Maria da Praia and the Romaria do Padre Cicero, two religious comunities from the 1960 s, south in the state of Pará, that still exist. The approach of the social-religious movements considers both the existing of its aspects: continuily, taken as a construction made up from the given cultural universe, and rupture, as a construction made by the actors that brings out a new social experience expressing a critical interpretation of their world. The text reconstructs the movements - its constitution process and trajectory - taking their history in the way they understand it as a guide-line. This reconstruction should consider the dynamic relations between: the signification structures and the concrete actions of the actors, the social-historical context and their specific experiences, and finally the cultural and religious traditions and the way the actors interpret them. The studied movements interpret the process in which the frontier is occupied, from the religious and peasant point of view. The frontier peasant spacial mobility is reinterpreted as mission and romaria and understood as a journey to the Bandeiras Verdes (identified with the wild forest) - a promissed land. In this way, the social-religious movements are a metaphor of the frontier peasant looking for its social place. It is also a preocupation of this text to show the reinterpretations and redefinitions of the projects the movements make - because of external events and their internal dynamics in the course of their history
