RESUMO

This is a study of the palatalization of the alveolar fricative segment syllabic in coda in dialect spoken in Recife, under the focus of the Linguistic Variation Theory and non-linear phonological representation. The corpus was extracted from twelve inquiries DID of the Project NURC â Recife, arbitrarily selected, making about 360 minutes. We found 5.369 occurrences of /s/ in coda position in internal and external word contexts. 3.911 alveolar and palatal occurrences were analyzed. A VARBRUL computational programs were used trying to detect linguistic and social changes that affect the phenomenon. The phonological representation is based on the purposes of the Feature Geometry ,in the light of the Unified Theory of Features for Consonants and Vowels
