RESUMO

The main objectives of this thesis was to improve the knowledge regarding the order Ephemeroptera, or Mayflies, in Brazil, as well as provide bases for future studies by taxonomists of this group and ecologists of aquatic insects in the country. The first step was to establish, based on literature, the less documented areas of Brazil regarding mayflies. After that, whenever possible, material from these areas was obtained in two ways: collecting trips or from museums and other institutions. Approximately 10.000 mayflies, mostly nymphs, from almost every Brazilian states were investigated. As a result were described: two new genera and one new species of Leptohyphidae, Macunahyphes and Amanahyphes, type-species, A. saguassu; eight new species of Baetidae, Varipes helenae, Cloeodes auwe, Camelobaetidius francischettii, C. hamadae, C. lassance, C. maranhensis, Baetodes santatereza, and B. liviae. The type-species of the genus Camelobaetidius, C. leentvaari, were redescribed based on the type-material and additional nymphs from Amapá State; the eggs and the nymphs of Oligoneurioides amazonicus were described, whereas his adults were redescribed for the first time since its original work. Several species, genera, families or even the order Ephemeroptera were reported for the first time from numerous municipalities, states, regions or from the country, while the distribution of several species and genera previously recorded was significantly extended. The first identification keys for the families, and for the genera of mayflies nymphs, as well as a checklist of the species reported from Brazil were provided, integrating the knowledge regarding the order in the country.
