RESUMO

The goal of this work is to make an initial analysis of the possibility of studying the lateral distribution of extensive air showers with the fluorescence technique, which may become possible by the significant improvements in the optical resolution of the fluorescence detector in the last years. A survey of the first developments of the technique is made in the beginning, followed by a review of the investigation of fluorescence emission in nitrogen and air and a general description of the technique of shower detection by the atmospheric fluorescence. The lateral distribution of electrons in different altitudes was investigated through Monte Carlo simulations with CORSIKA and the QGSJET model of hadronic interactions. In this study, showers with 10 19 and 10 20 eV, induced by protons and iron nuclei and registered in ten observation levels were considered. It was also studied the effective lateral extension of showers and its relation to the primary energy and composition. Finally, the text deals with the observation of a shower with lateral extension, by a fluorescence detector, including a description of the "light front" formation and the shower image produced in the detector, as well as an analysis of suggestions of measuring the lateral distribution of showers with the fluorescence technique
