RESUMO

In our work we review and discuss the main paths of the musical and aesthetic revolution which took place in the twentieth century. Beggining with the advent offormalism, we focus on the ideas of composers and philosophers, until the post-war vanguard which culminated with Cage. Next, we focus on aspects of the cientific influence on music composition, mainly that which ocurred after 1950. We review studies on psycho-acoustics, on the psychology of time, and research on the neuro-psychology of sound perception. We conclude showing some compositional processes which are based in aesthetics concepts as well as in scientific knowledge
