RESUMO

This dissertation has as its main objective to analyze the death and dying in the city of Juiz de Fora - MG, with imphasis in the tranformations lived from the creation of the Puclic Cemetery, officially inaugurated in 1864. The creation of this cemetery was directly influenced by the process of medication of death, occurred in many cities, mainly during the second half of 19th century. So, the tranference of the cemetery from the main Church to a place far form the urban center is the startin point of this research. In th context of this change of place more complex questions appeared, not only restricted to the scope of th cemetery but also inserted in the life of people in a general way. Thus new forms of experiencing death appear, and they are shown not only in the tombs, but also in the announcements of periodicals and death certificates, for example. Juiz de Fora is seem as an example of this change of mentality related to the death and dying, in their more significant particularities
