RESUMO
The aim of this study is to approach the life and works of Brazilian writer Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto (1881-1922), investigating the way he dealt with the meanings of his African ancestry in the historical context of 20th Century first decades. I interid to analyze the process of constant reformulation of his social identity searching one of his obsessions: the struggle against two stereotypes concerning people of African descent that associate them with animality and sensuality. These images represented for him starting points of an intimate and public discussion related to the traumatic insertion ofblack people in Brazilian history
