RESUMO

ABSTRACT Television directors, as well a film producers very often base their material on literature for their artistic realizations, making adaptataions of outstanding classics of literature. The object of this study is the adaptaions of the literary work Auto da Compadecida, by Ariano Suassuna, made for television by Guel Arraes (Globe network, 1999). The main objective is to understand how this intersemiotic translation, considered successful, was realized. The hypothesis to explain the quality of this adaptation was the capacity of transposing the narrative structure, which was used as a basis for the multiple dialogues leading to deeper meanings. To discuss these questions a comparative analysis between the theatre text and the miniseries was carried out, having as a basis the structure as a way of narrating the development of the characters and the cultural dialogues. Also discussed were the adaptations because of technical impositions of the environment and aesthetic options. For part of this analysis, the studies of Vladimir Propp, Iuri Lotman, Mikhail Bakhtin, Roman Jakobson and Tzvetan Todorov were taken as a basis. As far as the audiovisual media is concerned, in a specific way, this study is parallel to the ones by Arlindo Machado, Ana Maria Balogh, Roland Barthes, Omar Calabrese, Umberto Eco, Jesus Martin-Barbero, Lúcia Santaella, Lorenzo Vilches and Marshall McLuhan.
