RESUMO

Performance indicators are largely used in many applications related to support decision-making activities. In the context of product development, performance indicators are used to monitor the product development process effectiveness and efficiency as well the consecution of product attributes (mainly: performance, cost and quality). Although the widespread utilisation of performance indicators in industry and the available literature, many companies still face the challenge to understand the performance indicator matters in a clear overview of their nature, characteristics, morphology and usage, as well their role into the product development management process. Moreover, the task of derive performance indicators is still strongly based on brainstorming exercises that many times may not conduct to the most appropriate set of performance indicators. This thesis presents a diagnosis of the performance indicators subject, designed to introduce the reader into the matters of major significance in the role of performance indicators. This thesis also describes a method developed for deriving performance indicators for product development processes in an industrial context. The method is built based on the results of the performance indicators diagnosis as well the execution of one case study in a Brazilian company, major player at the international mobility industry. Both the diagnosis and the method development were extensively discussed and tested with experienced company s practitioners.
