RESUMO

This work deals with the establishment of a medicine of woman, that is, the emergence of two specialties geared toward knowledge of the female body: obstetrics and gynecology. In looking at the constitution of these two specifics forms of knowledge in the 19th century, I seek an understanding of the way in wich their object - woman- is defined. I also attempt to explain how these forms of knowledge came to difer from an earlier cultural tradition and its views of woman s nature and what impact they had on women s lives ando modes of self-representation
