RESUMO

The textbook can be thought as the social representation of a defined background knowledge, and a means by which the beliefs and values of an era are passed on. This allows us to consider various reflections about cultural history, which includes the study of societiesâ symbolic manifestations, connected to the possession and representation of a particular reality. The textbook also includes the document and object of this study presented in the historiography field of History teaching, reporting an analysis of the textbooks with a methodological viewpoint from the 1980âs and 1990âs. Starting from the way in which popular songs were used in those books (such as documents, methodological resources, and teaching materials, or an example of cultural manifestation), it was intended to detect the dimension of the changes which occurred in the educational historiography.
