RESUMO

During the 1990 decade the sugar and ethanol sector passed through deep structural changes that were derived, mainly, ftom the disarticulation or retreat ttom govemmental intervention in the countries agro business activities. Within this new approach, whose predominant mctors are the restructuring of the production activities, the global reduction of costs and an overall improvement in product quality - sugar and ethanol - the sector requires a particular shock treatment leading to the modernization of its agro industrial activities. A second factor that has become an important enterprise directive is the ability to compete in the world sugar market, because the substantial increase of sugar production in Brazil, during the last decade, turned exports into an important marketplace. However, as the sugar cane sector has always been under heavy govemmental control, most of the companies were, and are, late in tenns of applying modern standards of competitivity, product quality assurance and production costs. As a contribution to fi11 this gap, this study presents a proposal derived ftom logistic theories, enterprise competitivity concepts and a model of the sugarcane agroindustrial production chain, as a knowledge based method to support management actions to restructure, reduce costs and increase productivity in the sugar and ethanol companies
