RESUMO

The machine language is that language used for programming computers and derived machines, and in this regard, in the communication with these machines; and the natural language is that used by humans to communicate verbally by speech and writing. There exists a belief that the machine language has a predictable operation that translates into the character attributed to it of being an executable language. That belief, that originates in the abstract foundation upon which developed both the computer and the machine language, that is the boolean logic, puts this language and the natural language in antagonistic positions where the first appears to be executable and the second as being non-executable. Despite its abstract origin the machine language is not a mere abstraction. When in operation one realizes that the code is a cultural system, and as such presents resemblances with other cultural systems, by example, with the natural language itself. In order to investigate in what conditions that character of executable is pertinent and, on the other hand, to what extent that language is a cultural system, this work was elaborated in three steps. The first presents some important events in the development of the computer and of the mechanism of communication with that machine to turn visible its abstract origin from which derives its executable character. In sequence, based in a semiotic conception of language, that mechanism of communication with the computer was analyzed regarding the pertinence of being called a language. Finally, from cultural semiotic concepts and situations involving the machine language, it was possible to identify in this language some characteristics intrinsic to the cultural systems. If from the semiotic point of view the operation of these languages resembles rather then diverges, then the antagonism between human and machine perhaps deserves a new evaluation. This is a hypothesis to which this study points, however open to future inquiries.
