RESUMO

The purpose of this research was to develop a reading methodology that focused on three aspects of the reading process: 1. The reading comprehension of explicit information; 2. The processing of inferences and 3. The development of the readers critical stance toward the written texts, to be used in the youth and adult education. Underlying such methodology there was the concept of literacy as social practices. The work included a short history of youth and adult education in Brazil, which has been historically treated as a marginal educational task, despite the large number of adult illiterates in the country. Several legal documents concerning the policy of youth and adult education were revised. The study followed the principles of The New Studies of Literacy, which are based on the so-called ideological concept of Literacy. The study also drew from the tradition of Text Linguistics, Interactional Sociolinguistics and Psycholinguistics. The adopted qualitative methodology was that of an action participant research by means of which the researcher contributed to the implementation of important changes in the processes of reading in a class of youth and adults, and it was based mainly on DellIsola (2001) and Bortone (2007). The results showed that the reading process of the target group was very much improved and that the whole experience turned out to be an act of social construction.
