RESUMO

This work presents a research about reading and comprehension of conceptual anaphors (CA). These are anaphors that do not agree in number with their antecedents. So anaphors and antecedents have not the same reference. We use the Frames Theory (BARSALOU, 1992) to explain how people understand the relation between anaphors and antecedents in a text using their world knowledge and the context. In two experiments with subjects from a University, we investigate how people understand the conceptual anaphors. In the first experiment, subjects rated sentences containing conceptual anaphors to be linguistically correct and indicated the referente of these anaphors. In the second, we realized a self-paced test. We presented sentences which there were conceitual anaphors and others which antecedents and anaphors agreed each other. We expected that conceptual anaphors would be read more slower than the other anaphor. We found that subjects understand conceptual anaphors. The results showed that subjects used different skills to read the anaphors. Our conclusion is tat reading is a dynamic process and that readers have a important role in this process.
