RESUMO
This study determined the influence of environmental factors expressed as gradients on the richness and composition of species of snakes in the Reserva Adolpho Ducke, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. We used 46 plots of 250 m in length, 30 uniformly distributed, which follow the altitudinal contours, and 16 riparians, which follow the streams. Each plot was surveyed six times for snakes. The environmental variables tested were distance from streams, litter depth, slope of terrain and percentage of clay in soil for uniformly distributed plots, and litter depth and size of streams for riparian plots. We found 189 snakes belonging to 38 species in six families, but the rarefaction curve (Mao Tau index) did not reach an asymptote. Eleven species were not included in anlyses because they were recorded only outside the limits of the plots. There was no evidence of relationship between number of species recorded per plot and any of the variables measured. However, the species composition summarized by four NMDS axes, based on a matrix of Chao dissimilarities between plots, differed significantly between riparian and non-riparian areas. Litter depth apparently influences the composition of species in both riparian and non-riparian areas, but this result may reflect the influence of the litter layer on the detectability of species. The difference in species composition between riparian and non-riparian plots has important implications for management and conservation, because the Brazilian environmental law provides protection out to 30 m from streams of similar sizes to the Reserva Ducke. However, the snakes seem to recognize larger riparian areas. If only those areas contemplated by the law were protected, so the majority of species associated with riparian areas would be at risk.
