RESUMO

Historically, the brazilian textile industry always has played an important role generating income and employment. The understanding of the importance of the textile industry to the brazilian economy becomes very clear wheng recovering to the course of the brazilian industrialization process, to realize that it was the pioneer and perhaps the more traditional industry of brazilian economy. The brazilian economy, in ninenties, has faced several and deep changes: the international trade releasement, monetary stabilization and internal industrial politics. All inserted in the economic globalization process, has forced brazilian firms to reach an higher level of productivity and competitivity. This study is to demonstrate the behavior of the brazilian textile industry inserted in this scenano. The empiric analysis reveals the brazilian textile industry hardly influenced by the trade internationalization process. The international competition imposes a heavy onus to its production, closing a lot of firms, firing a mass of employees, and alerting to the necessity of a production process review in order to gain scale and production specialization. A lot of investments were necessary to the brazilian textile industry modernization, and its results in a sucess full affair. The improved brazilian textile industry started presenting very high and consistent labour productivity indices. Also, its suffered a concentration process, when the number of factories and employees has, reduced drastically, by the other hand the production volume has not increased so much in the ininenties. The brazilian textile industry that historically has offered high employment, becomes in a concentrated industry with less firms and a vey lower leve! of employment
