RESUMO

This study was developed around the issues related to consumption of agricultural products of organic origin and the process of labeling of these products in order that sought to examine whether this form of consumer goods are conscious enough to give preference to consumption of products labeled organic, considering the positive impact of their production to the environment and the health of those who consume them. Thus, we carried out an analysis of the factors related to the consumption of organic products in order to evaluate the importance of environmental labeling as a tool to aid the process of sustainable development in the city of Fortaleza in Ceara state. The concentration area of work relates to public policies, especially those aimed at promoting the sustainability of economic development. The research methodology was based on a theoretical stage, through document collection in specific literature and empirical, through field research. In implementing the empirical stage, there was a survey of primary data in the city to study, so that it applied the questionnaire to supermarkets and retail trades that offers, among others, products of organic origin. The sample consisted of 110 (one hundred and ten) questionnaires to consumers and non-consumers of organic products. The Logit model was used in order to measure the propensity of consumers to continue paying a higher price for organic products and the propensity of consumers spending not to consume them. It was found that the health concern figured among the most important factors in relation to consumption and the propensity to consume this type of product, and that this factor turns out to generate a positive contribution to the environment.
