RESUMO

The purpose of this work is to investigate the social function of high school in the context of Brazilian capitalist society, from XVI to XIX century, in the context of colonial politic and imperial conjuncture. This period of time, in relation to Brazil, has the economic structure based on the agriculture/extractive production and slave work as a common target, which was submitted to Portugal interests and European capitalism, as well as a structured education from the implantation of patterns of European culture, they worked out with the educational politics during this period. This work leads with the organization and the high school function, from this a totality analysis, it is centered in different conjunctures, a function of this level of teaching is established depending on interests of hegemonic historic blocs. The investigation is base on written documents, where their primary sources were the official documents which work the organization of high school in each period, with plans of study, edictal, orientation to professors, laws, decrees, regulations, reports of State. From high school organization studies, we identified that the functions to establish were involved to constitution of historic blocs, it became a space of hegemony consolidation of power classes. It was cleared that historically, the high school presented an introduction function, because it was submitted to aristocratic elite interests whom wished superior level to professional formation. Finally, into any interests from different historic blocs who were built in each conjuncture moment, the high school and superior level carry out the fundamental function of formation in management and intellectual spaces tuned with the hegemonic interests
